A Helpful Workshop at a Recently Renovated Library
11:00am 14.07.2009
Over 35 city, village, and school librarians participated in a workshop on July 14, 2009 entitled “Libraries as Centers of Civil Society,” organized by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy. The seminar was held in the Embassy sponsored “American Corners” section of the library and the presenters were especially pleased to find the library in outstanding condition in its entirety.
Nerses Hayrapetyan, Director of the U.S. Embassy Information Resource Center, presented three different topics for discussion. Later Liana Sahakyan introduced the Embassy’s Democracy Commission Small Grants Program, which encourages librarians, in cooperation with local NGOs, to apply and gain funding for developing local libraries and related services. A lively discussion followed each of the presentations.
Despite the excellent conditions at the regional library, the Embassy personnel were disappointed to hear that the libraries outside of the provincial capital were in dismal condition. An interesting discussion followed the seminar. Additionally, two local TV stations covered the event.
