12:00pm 21.05.2008
Dear Patrons and Friends,
On May 21, 2008, U.S. Embassy Regional Legal Advisor Steve Kessler gave a public lecture at the American Corner in Kapan entitled “Ten Key Differences Between the Armenian and American Criminal Justice Systems.”
Mr. Kessler discussed key differences between the two justice systems, identifying the advantages and disadvantages of both. He also mentioned that his role in Armenia is not to change the criminal justice system, but to help improve it. He said that the Armenian justice system was heavily influenced by the former Soviet system.
Mr. Kessler spoke about a jury verdict system, which does not exist in the Armenian justice system. He explained who can be on a jury and how jury members are selected. Mr. Kessler also mentioned that in rare cases, the jury system doesn’t work properly. He also discussed how people are arrested.
